Garner's December Runs on One Civic Club's Calendar. Here's How the Season Lines Up.

When you buy a Fraser fir on Vandora Springs Road and then watch the Christmas parade come down Main Street two weeks later, who did you just support twice?

In both cases it's the Garner Optimist Club. The club says it was "Established in 1966." It runs the tree lot at 2110 Vandora Springs Road and has organized the Garner Christmas Parade since 2023. Taken together, Garner's two biggest holiday traditions make up one volunteer group's fundraising and community season. That explains most of how they work, from the lot's closing date to the parade's age limit for drivers.

Where the Tree Money Goes

The club's 2026 tree lot page says simply that "All proceeds support our local scholarship and giving programs." The club's giving page names who those programs reach, and nearly all of them are in Garner:

  • Abe Wade Scholarships
  • The CA Tanner Baseball Scholarship
  • A sponsorship of the Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina
  • Me Fine Foundation
  • The Gold Star tree donated through the Garner Veterans Committee
  • Practice space for the Neuse River Big Band
  • Instruments for the South Garner High School Band

The club doesn't publish dollar amounts for any of these. Still, the list shows what a tree purchase becomes: a scholarship, a practice room for a local big band, or a horn for a high school musician.

A Sale That Ends When the Trees Do

The lot opens Sunday, November 22, at noon. The club's event calendar gives Sunday, December 13, at 8 p.m. as the end date. The lot page itself names the last day as "Last Tree Sold" and warns that "Our stock of fresh trees is limited. Once we sell out the sale is over." So December 13 is the latest the lot could close. It may close sooner.

Day Hours
Monday through Friday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Thanksgiving Day, November 26 Closed

On weekdays, the hours fit an after-work stop. Every tree is a freshly harvested, North Carolina-grown Fraser fir in small, medium or large. The club turns the trimmings into handmade wreaths in several sizes, and trimming and local delivery are free. The lot takes cash, checks and credit cards.

The calendar matters here. The lot's first Saturday is November 28, which is also one of the two dates listed for the downtown tree lighting. More on that below. Its second Saturday is December 5, parade day.

How the Parade Ended Up With the Same Club

The parade hasn't always been the club's. Its organizers say that after a COVID hiatus, the Garner Christmas Parade came back in 2021 and 2022 under a citizen-led community committee. In 2023 the Optimist Club took over.

The safety rules came before the handoff, and the club kept them. Beginning in 2022, the parade committee put in place driver and vehicle checks recommended by the Garner Police Department. Organizers confirm each driver's license and accept only drivers over 30. They also check vehicle registration and inspection, and each driver goes through a one-on-one review of emergency instructions and confirms they understood it. The vehicle and safety page requires at least 30 feet between vehicles and walkers, and 20 feet between a vehicle and any vehicle, trailer or float ahead of it. CBS 17 reported in December 2022 that Garner's organizers tightened these measures after a fatal accident at Raleigh's parade the month before.

Those wide gaps mean a longer parade with more space between units. When you plan where to stand and how long to stay, assume a slower parade than the one you remember from before 2022.

December 5 Is One Long Afternoon This Year

This year's parade takes place on Saturday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Garner. The parade site says it "will include the Town of Garner's Holiday Block Party Starting at 2pm." The two events now share one afternoon:

  1. 12:30 p.m. A small section of Purvis Street closes to all traffic until about 6:30 p.m.
  2. 2 p.m. The free Holiday Block Party starts at Garner Recreation Center, 215 W Main St., with kids' holiday crafts, food trucks, games, music, the Garner Express train ride around the outdoor walking trail, and Santa.
  3. About 4 p.m. Main Street closes for the parade.
  4. 4:30 p.m. The block party ends on the Town's calendar and the parade begins.

Where you park decides when you can leave. The Town's block party page lists Garner Baseball Inc. as a parking option, then warns that "Cars parked in the Main St lot will not be able to leave from approx. 4-6pm while Main Street is closed for the parade." If a young child at the block party will be done by 3:45, that lot will keep you longer than you want to stay.

The Town also lists the Garner Recreation Center, which has accessible parking, along with Avery Street Recreation Center & Park, the Garner Senior Center and Garner Recreational Park. Reaching the last three means crossing the railroad tracks. The Town names three safe crossings, at Highway 50/Benson Road, St. Mary's Street and New Rand Road, and asks people not to cross anywhere else or climb the fence. The Town has also posted a Holiday Block Party Sensory Guidebook for families who want to plan ahead.

Don't plan around downtown's new parking yet. The Town is building a 48-space lot at Rand Mill Road and East Main Street. The Town's Engineering Quarterly Capital Report dated October 22, 2026 lists it as still under construction, with paving on Rand Mill still to be scheduled and completion projected for "Winter 2026."

The parade site's "Parade Day Information" section, with times, activities and maps, and its participant list were both marked "Coming Soon" in late October. Check the site again before you choose a spot along Main Street.

The Tree Lighting Listed for Two Dates

The one event downtown that the Optimist Club doesn't run is also the one without a settled date. The Downtown Garner Association has two 2026 listings for Light Up Main:

  • Saturday, November 28, 3 to 6 p.m. This listing pairs the lighting with Small Business Saturday all day. It includes Santa visits at participating locations from 3 to 5:30, a Very Merry Read-a-Loud with Santa at 5:55 sponsored by Banks Bed & Breakfast, and the tree lighting at 6 with Mayor Buddy Gupton. Visit Raleigh lists the same date.
  • Friday, December 4, 5 to 8 p.m. This listing moves the read-aloud to 6:55 and the tree lighting to 7. It also appears on the association's Downtown Garner location page.

Both listings give 120 E Main St. as the location. If the December 4 listing holds, downtown would have the tree lighting Friday night and the block party and parade Saturday afternoon. If November 28 holds, the lighting lands on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Optimist lot's first Saturday. Confirm the date with the Downtown Garner Association before Thanksgiving week.

The Weeks Before the Lot Opens

November has a few dates before the tree season starts. Garner's free Veterans Day Observance is Wednesday, November 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road. Breakfast, hosted by the Poole Family YMCA, starts at 9 a.m. The Garner Veterans Committee is the same group the Optimist Club works with on its Gold Star tree.

That weekend, the Garner Performing Arts Center at 742 W. Garner Road presents Broken Compass Bluegrass on Friday, November 13, and Southern Shade of Blue: Carrie Marshall on Saturday, November 14, both at 7:30 p.m. Eight days later, the lot at 2110 Vandora Springs Road opens at noon and the club's season begins.
